Iaal Fortress, also known as Mustafa Barbar Agha Fortress, is a historic defensive castle situated on a strategic hill in the village of Iaal within the Zgharta District of Lebanon's North Governorate. Constructed in 1816 by Mustafa Agha Barbar, the Ottoman Governor of Tripoli, the structure exemplifies Ottoman military architecture designed to leverage panoramic views for defense. The fortress spans approximately 5,000 square meters and features a fortified entrance with a metal-studded wooden door. Inside, the complex originally housed essential facilities including stables, wells, sleeping quarters, and water reservoirs, reflecting its dual role as a military garrison and a residential seat of power.

The interior layout centers around a courtyard containing a distinctive stone basin known as the "basin of the lions," named for the lion carvings adorning its surface. Surrounding this central area are small rooms that historically served as bathrooms and bedrooms, while a stone staircase leads to an upper level where the governor maintained his office adjacent to the women's quarters. Behind the main structure lies a small graveyard containing the tombs of Barbar and his family, along with a mosque and old barracks. Although the castle has lost most of its roof over time, a specific section remains intact and is currently inhabited by descendants of the Barbar family, preserving a living connection to its past.

Accessible via the town of Zgharta, the fortress stands as a significant landmark in the region, offering visitors a glimpse into early nineteenth-century Ottoman governance in Lebanon. Despite partial ruin, the site retains its historical grandeur and continues to serve as a testament to the strategic importance of the area during the Ottoman era.
