Hoogstraten Castle
Hoogstraten Castle, also known as Gelmel Castle, is a historic moated fortress located in Hoogstraten, Belgium. While local legend attributes its origins to a wooden tower built by the Viking leader Gelmel in the 9th century, the first verified stone fortifications date back to the late 12th century. The structure evolved significantly over time, initially serving as a forward bastion for the Margraviate of Antwerp before being rebuilt as a Gothic stronghold with concentric walls in the early 15th century under Jan IV van Cuijk. Its most transformative period occurred between 1525 and 1555 when Elisabeth of Culemborg and her husband, Antoine of Lalaing, commissioned architect Rombout II Keldermans to convert the military site into a magnificent Renaissance-style princely residence.
During its Renaissance peak, the castle featured three rings of fortifications, watchtowers, drawbridges, an armoury, chapels, and extensive gardens with fountains, reflecting the high status of its owners within the Habsburg Netherlands. Although subsequent fires, sieges, and French confiscation destroyed much of the original fabric, key architectural elements such as the massive gatehouse and corner towers remain standing today. These surviving structures offer a tangible link to the era when the estate served as a luxurious showpiece alongside the family's city palaces in Antwerp, Brussels, and Mechelen.
Since 1810, the castle has ceased to function as a noble residence and has instead housed various social and penal institutions. Currently, the site remains state property and operates as a penitentiary school centre. Despite its change in function from a royal court to a correctional facility, Hoogstraten Castle endures as a significant historical landmark. It represents centuries of architectural evolution from a simple timber tower to a fortified Gothic stronghold and finally to a grand Renaissance palace, maintaining its presence in the Belgian landscape through adaptive reuse.
