The Grand Ducal Palace is located in Luxembourg City in southern Luxembourg and serves as the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. While the Grand Duke's principal residence is Berg Castle in Colmar-Berg, the palace functions as the seat where he performs most of his duties as head of state. The palace is situated in the heart of the capital and remains one of the country's most significant governmental buildings.

The building has a rich history spanning several centuries. Originally constructed as Luxembourg City's town hall in 1572, it served that function until 1795. Subsequently, it became the seat of the prefecture and later the headquarters of the Luxembourg Government in 1817. From 1817 onwards, it functioned as the residence of the governor representing the Dutch grand dukes. The building's interior underwent significant renovation in 1883 in preparation for a royal visit. Following the House of Nassau-Weilburg's accession in 1890, the palace became exclusively reserved for the grand duke and his family, with comprehensive renovations and a new wing designed by Belgian architect Gédéon Bordiau and Luxembourg's state architect Charles Arendt.

The palace endured considerable hardship during World War II, when Nazi occupation forces repurposed it as a concert hall and tavern, resulting in substantial damage to its furniture, art collections, and jewels. Following Grand Duchess Charlotte's return from exile in 1945, restoration efforts began. Major renovations occurred during the 1960s under Charlotte's supervision and again comprehensively between 1991 and 1996, with ongoing updates to maintain modern comfort standards. The palace continues to serve its governmental function today.
