Gârbou is a commune situated in the eastern part of Sălaj County within the Transylvania region of Romania. Located at an altitude of 275 meters on the banks of the Brâglez River, it lies approximately 42 kilometers from the county seat of Zalău and borders Cluj County. The area is composed of seven distinct villages, including Gârbou itself, Solomon, and Bezded. Historically, the commune has been a significant settlement, with population records dating back to the mid-19th century showing a peak in the early 1900s before a gradual decline to under 1,800 residents in recent years. The community is predominantly Romanian, with a notable Roma minority, and has produced notable natives such as the revolutionary and historian Alexandru Papiu Ilarian.

The most prominent historical feature of the area is the Haller Castle, an aristocratic residence constructed during the 18th century. While the main structure no longer stands intact, its ruins remain a designated historic monument that attracts local interest. Today, visitors can observe the surviving stone arched entrance adorned with the family crest, the remnants of a Catholic chapel, and a scenic road lined with large chestnut trees that once led to the estate. In addition to the castle ruins, the commune houses the Wooden Church in Solomon, another protected historic monument built in the 18th century, which stands as a testament to the region's traditional religious architecture and cultural heritage.

Currently, Gârbou functions as a quiet rural administrative unit connected by county road DJ108B to nearby towns like Surduc and Dej. Although the grandeur of the Haller Castle has faded over time, leaving only fragments of its former glory, the site retains significant historical value for understanding the noble history of Transylvania. The preservation of both the castle ruins and the wooden church highlights the commune's commitment to maintaining its architectural legacy. These sites, combined with the natural landscape of the river valley and chestnut avenues, offer a glimpse into the past for those exploring the lesser-known corners of Sălaj County.
