Fukuchiyama Castle is a historic hilltop fortress located in the city of Fukuchiyama within Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Originally constructed in 1572 by the Yokoyama clan using stone, earthwork, and wood, the site holds significant historical value due to its reconstruction in 1580 by the famous warlord Akechi Mitsuhide. After capturing the Tanba Province, Mitsuhide rebuilt the castle upon the older foundations, establishing it as a key military installation that remained in use until 1872. Like many traditional structures across the nation, the original buildings were largely dismantled during the Meiji Restoration as part of the government's modernization efforts, leaving only fragments of the initial complex.

In the modern era, the castle has been revitalized through community effort. In 1986, following a spirited campaign by local residents, the tenshu, or main keep, was reconstructed to restore the skyline of the city. Today, the property is owned by the City of Fukuchiyama and functions as a local history museum, allowing visitors to explore the region's past. While the wooden keep is a modern reproduction, many of the original stone walls from the feudal era still stand, providing an authentic link to the castle's defensive origins. The grounds also feature Toyoiwa-no-I, a notable well recognized as the deepest of any castle in Japan.

The cultural importance of Fukuchiyama Castle was formally acknowledged in 2017 when it was listed as one of the Continued Top 100 Japanese Castles. This designation highlights its enduring legacy despite the destruction of its primary structures in the nineteenth century. The site now serves as both an educational resource and a symbol of local pride, blending reconstructed architecture with surviving historical elements to tell the story of the Yokoyama and Akechi clans.
