Franc-Waret Castle
wikipedia

Château de Franc-Waret is a historic estate located in the village of Franc-Waret within the municipality of Fernelmont, in the Namur province of Wallonia, Belgium. The site originally hosted a fortified farmhouse, known as a ferme-château, dating back to the 13th century. In the 16th century, the de Groesbeeck family acquired and refurbished the property, transforming it into a summer residence. While the original 16th-century block remains intact with its drawbridge and angle-towers, a significant residential wing was added in the mid-18th century by Alexandre François de Groesbeeck. This expansion was executed in the rural Louis XV style, contributing to the castle's distinct architectural character that blends medieval fortification elements with elegant classical design.

The castle is entirely surrounded by moats and sits within extensive grounds spanning approximately 120 hectares. The landscape features a combination of formal French gardens and a sprawling English-style park, complete with an orangery. Inside, the interiors reflect the grandeur of the 17th and 18th centuries, adorned with antique furniture, silverware, porcelain, and tapestries. The collection also includes old books and notable paintings, with some works attributed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Historically, the property passed from the de Groesbeeck family to the Comtes de Croix at the end of the 18th century, and subsequently to the Comtes d'Andigné.

Today, the château remains privately owned and inhabited by the Comtes d'Andigné, preserving its status as a living piece of heritage. Despite being a private residence, the lavishly decorated rooms are accessible to the public by appointment, offering visitors a glimpse into its august history and artistic treasures. Recognized as part of Wallonia's Major Heritage, the estate stands as a well-preserved example of Belgian aristocratic life, maintaining both its structural integrity and its rich interior collections for future generations.
