Fortica Fortress is a ruined early modern hilltop castle located in the town of Otočac within Lika-Senj County, Croatia. Perched on a flat hill at the northern end of the settlement, the structure commands a strategic view over the town and the Gacka River valley. Constructed between 1619 and approximately 1630 by Uskoks and the Military Administration of the Croatian Military Frontier, the fortress was built using rough-hewn ashlar stone. Its primary architectural purpose was to serve as a defensive stronghold against incursions by the Ottoman Empire, protecting the local population and securing the western frontier where Ottoman advances typically halted near the nearby area of Prozor.

The site holds significant historical depth, as the current structure was erected upon the foundations of a medieval fortification documented in 1449 during the division of the powerful Frankopan family estates. For much of the 17th century, it functioned as a vital military hub for Croatian forces. However, following the reduction of Ottoman threats and the liberation of the Lika region in the late 1600s, the fortress gradually lost its strategic necessity. By the 19th century, it was repurposed as a gunpowder warehouse and residence for military staff before falling into neglect after 1850. During this period of abandonment, local residents dismantled large portions of the walls to harvest stone for constructing their own homes, leaving the structure to be reclaimed by forests and shrubs.

Today, Fortica Fortress exists as a partially restored ruin that stands as a testament to the region's turbulent military past. While it no longer serves an active defensive role, the remaining walls offer insight into the engineering of the Croatian Military Frontier era. The site has transitioned from a forgotten relic hidden in vegetation to a recognized historical landmark. Recent efforts have focused on stabilizing and restoring parts of the complex, ensuring that the legacy of this former guardian of the Gacka Valley is preserved for future generations and visitors interested in Croatia's defense history against the Ottoman Turks.
