Fort St George

Fort St. George, historically known as White Town, is a prominent fortress located in the coastal city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Constructed in 1639 by the British East India Company under the leadership of Francis Day, it holds the distinction of being the first English fortress established in India. The structure was built on a piece of land originally called Chennirayarpattinam, which was largely uninhabited at the time. Its construction served as the catalyst for further settlements and trading activities, effectively leading to the evolution of the city of Madras, now Chennai, around its perimeter. This strategic location was chosen specifically to secure trade lines and commercial interests near the Malaccan Straits.
