# Fort Augustaborg

Fort Augustaborg is a former Danish fort located on the eastern Gold Coast in present-day Ghana, situated approximately 15 kilometers east of Fort Christiansborg near the modern town of Teshie. Constructed in 1787, the structure was named in honor of Princess Louise Augusta of Denmark. Its primary initial purpose was to serve as a defensive stronghold against attacks from the Portuguese Empire. During its early operational years, the fort also functioned as a trading post involved in the Atlantic slave trade, a grim chapter of history that ended shortly after Denmark became the first European nation to abolish the practice just five years after the fort's completion.

The site holds significant historical value regarding colonial transitions in West Africa. On August 17, 1850, Fort Augustaborg was one of five Danish forts purchased by Queen Victoria, marking the transfer of control from Denmark to Britain. Following Ghana's independence in 1957, ownership passed to the new national administration. Today, the fort exists primarily as ruins, as depicted in photographs from the late nineteenth century and more recent images from 2016 showing remaining walls. Despite its dilapidated condition, it remains an important cultural landmark.

Currently, Fort Augustaborg is recognized as part of a collective UNESCO World Heritage Site, grouped with 32 other forts and castles along the Ghanaian coast that testify to the region's complex colonial past.
