Esch-sur-Sûre Castle is a historic ruin situated on a prominent spur within the small town of Esch-sur-Sûre in north-western Luxembourg. The site benefits from a unique natural defense provided by a sharp meander in the River Sûre, which surrounds the town and castle on three sides. Originally established in 927 by Meginaud and his wife Hiletrude, the initial structure featured a square Romanesque tower. During the 13th century, the last Counts of Esch significantly enlarged the complex, transforming it into a Gothic-style fortress. As military technology evolved with the introduction of gunpowder in the 15th century, further defenses were added, including a massive village wall, defensive towers, a round watchtower known as the Lochturm, and new entrance gates.

The castle's decline began in the mid-16th century, culminating in its deliberate dismantling in 1685 by troops serving Louis XIV. While the main keep was destroyed, the outer walls remained intact and were subsequently incorporated into the back walls of local homes. For a time, the ruins served as residences for common families, a situation observed by Victor Hugo during his visit in 1871. In 1902, an Egyptian buyer named Martin Riano d'Hutzt purchased the site and initiated restoration efforts under architect Charles Arendt, successfully repairing the chapel by 1906 before funds were exhausted.

Today, the location remains a picturesque ruin, though it has seen renewed attention since the Luxembourg State acquired the property in 2005. Restoration work commenced the following year to preserve the historical integrity of the site. Currently, the castle grounds are open to the public, offering visitors a glimpse into centuries of regional history. The ruins are also illuminated in the evenings, highlighting the dramatic setting above the river and the village below. It stands as a categorized monument among the ruined castles of the Ardennes and Eifel regions.
