Dardana Fortress, known locally as Kalaja e Dardanës, is a significant archaeological site located on a hill northwest of Kamenica in eastern Kosovo. Situated at an altitude of 560 meters, the fortress spans approximately three hectares and represents a multi-layered settlement with origins tracing back to the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age, specifically the eighth and seventh centuries BCE. While early artifacts include Neolithic tools and Bronze Age pottery fragments brought from elsewhere, the site flourished as a hilltop settlement for the Dardani people during classical antiquity. It was later reconstructed in the Late Roman period, between the fourth and sixth centuries CE, serving as a strategic component of the fortification system within the Roman province of Dardania.

The architectural remains visible today primarily date to this Late Antiquity phase, featuring a robust defensive system composed of two lines of ramparts. These walls follow the irregular natural contours of the hill and were constructed using a core-and-veneer technique with local medium-sized sandstone, varying in width from 140 to 210 centimeters. Although the location was identified in the 1970s, systematic excavations only commenced in 2012 under the management of the Archaeological Institute of Kosovo. A pivotal discovery occurred in 1992 when a funerary stele was found accidentally at the foot of the hill, providing crucial insights into Illyrian burial customs and revealing extensive trade patterns between Dardania and the wider Mediterranean region.

Currently, Dardana Fortress stands as a protected historical landmark that continues to yield valuable information about ancient Balkan civilizations. Ongoing archaeological work has expanded knowledge of the region, with similar sites recently discovered nearby in the Kamenica area. The fortress offers a tangible connection to the complex history of the Illyrians and their integration into the Roman Empire, marking it as an essential site for understanding the cultural and military evolution of eastern Kosovo from prehistoric times through late antiquity.
