Despite the name suggesting a castle, Dannebrog is actually the Royal Yacht of the Kingdom of Denmark, serving as a floating residence for the Danish royal family rather than a terrestrial fortress. Constructed between 1931 and 1932 at the Naval Dockyard in Copenhagen, the vessel was launched by Queen Alexandrine and commissioned in May 1932. Named after the national flag, the ship features a riveted steel hull with a distinctive clipper bow and an elliptical stern. Its architectural design reflects early twentieth-century naval engineering, originally intended to serve a dual purpose as both a peacetime royal yacht and a wartime hospital ship, though the latter role is now considered obsolete given its age.

The yacht holds significant historical value as the successor to an 1879 paddle steamer of the same name. The interior of the current vessel incorporates furniture and fittings salvaged from that previous royal ship, creating a tangible link to Denmark's maritime heritage. The royal accommodations include studies for the monarch and consort, a dining saloon, lounges, and bedrooms, all fitted out with personal input from previous royal generations. While primarily used for official overseas visits and summer cruises within Danish waters, the ship also retains the capacity to participate in surveillance and sea-rescue operations when at sea.

Currently, His Danish Majesty's Yacht Dannebrog remains in active service under the command of the Chief of the King's Naval Household. It functions as the official and private residence for King Frederik X and his family during their travels. The crew consists of members of the Royal Danish Navy, including officers and enlisted personnel who maintain the vessel's operational readiness. Although it is no longer expected to serve as a hospital ship, the covered quarterdeck continues to be utilized for official receptions during port visits, maintaining its status as a vital symbol of the Danish monarchy's presence on the water.
