Chirag Gala
Chirag Gala, also known as Çıraqqala, is an ancient ruined fortress situated in the Shabran District of Azerbaijan. Perched atop a mountain within the Guba Forest, the site commands a strategic view over the Caspian Sea coastal plains north of Baku. Constructed by the Sassanid Persians during the 5th century AD, the structure originally served as a critical lookout post within the extensive Gilgichay defensive system, which included other notable fortifications in Baku and Derbent. Its name translates to "lamp castle" or "lamp fortress" in Azerbaijani, a title derived from its historical function where guards would light torches to warn nearby settlements of sudden enemy invasions.
The architectural layout of the fortress takes the form of an irregular rectangle, designed to maximize the natural advantages of the rugged terrain. Although its primary military role ceased by the 18th century when it was utilized for the defense of the Quba khanate, the site underwent partial renovation during the mid-20th century to preserve its remaining structures. Today, Chirag Gala stands as a significant historic landmark that attracts tourists and history enthusiasts. However, accessing the ruins presents a physical challenge; due to the presence of large rocks and rough, unpaved roads, the location is nearly impossible to reach by vehicle, requiring most visitors to make the final ascent on foot.
Despite its current state as a ruin, Chirag Gala remains a testament to the region's rich military history and ancient engineering. The combination of its remote mountain setting and its legacy as a beacon of warning creates a unique atmosphere for visitors willing to undertake the hike. The site continues to be recognized not only for its age but for its integral role in the historical defense networks of the Caucasus, linking the past strategies of the Sassanid Empire with the later history of the Azerbaijani khanates.
