# Château de Faulx-les-Tombes

Faulx-les-Tombes Castle is a historic 19th-century château located in the village of Faulx-les-Tombes within the municipality of Gesves, in the province of Namur, Wallonia, Belgium. While the current structure dates to the modern era, the site holds deep historical roots with the first castle originally constructed during the 13th century as a dependency of the County of Namur. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands multiple times, notably passing to the Marbaix family around 1340 and later becoming the long-term property of the Corswaren family in 1665, who retained ownership until the upheaval of the French Revolution.

The existing building is a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture, designed by the renowned architect Henri Beyaert and completed in 1872 on the foundations of the medieval predecessor. Despite its architectural significance, the castle suffered a major setback when it was badly damaged by a fire in 1961. Following this disaster, the property was acquired by the town of Etterbeek in 1970 in an effort to preserve the landmark. However, the castle has since returned to private ownership and is currently not accessible to the general public, remaining a secluded piece of Belgian heritage.

Today, the castle stands as a testament to the region's evolving architectural and feudal history, bridging the gap between its medieval origins and its 19th-century reconstruction. Although the interior remains closed to visitors due to its private status, the exterior continues to represent the grandeur of the Neo-Gothic style in the Namur province. Its journey from a strategic county dependency to a private residence highlights the changing social and political landscapes of Wallonia over nearly eight hundred years.
