Château de Bolland

Bolland Castle, known locally as Château de Bolland, is a historic fortress situated in the municipality of Herve within Liège Province, Wallonia, Belgium. The structure represents a blend of architectural periods, with its most prominent surviving feature being the medieval keep. While the core of the building dates back to the Middle Ages, several other sections were constructed during the 16th century, followed by major renovation and expansion works carried out in the 17th century. Historically, the estate was protected by a moat, which has since disappeared, and was once accompanied by a convent of Recollects founded in the 1600s by Jean de Berlo and his wife Marguerite d'Eynatten.

The castle boasts a rich lineage of ownership that reflects the region's noble history. Initial medieval proprietors included the d'Houffalize and Brandenberg families. Control later passed to the d'Eynatten, Berlo, and Groesbeek families during the 16th and 17th centuries. The de Lannoys acquired the property in the 17th century and held it until the 19th century, when it transferred to the de Berlaymont family. In 1920, Baron Adhemar de Royer de Dour de Fraula purchased the estate from the de Berlaymonts.

Today, Bolland Castle remains a private residence rather than a public museum or ruin. It is still owned and inhabited by the descendants of Baron Adhemar de Royer de Dour de Fraula, who have maintained the property for over a century. This continuous occupation by a single family since the early 20th century distinguishes it from many other Belgian castles that have been converted for commercial use or left to decay. The site stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the local aristocracy and the architectural evolution of fortifications in the Liège region.
