Chastel Rouge

Chastel Rouge, also known as Qal'at Yahmur, is a small Crusader stronghold located in the village of Yahmur within the Tartus Governorate of northwestern Syria. Situated on the coastal plain between Tartus and Tripoli, the castle lies approximately 12 kilometers from Tartus and 10 kilometers from Safita. Unlike many contemporary fortifications that utilized natural terrain for defense, this site relied entirely on its constructed walls due to its flat surroundings. The structure features a rectangular outer enclosure with corner towers and a central two-story donjon measuring 16 by 14 meters. Architectural analysis suggests a two-phase construction history, with the outer walls dating to the early 12th century and the main keep added in the early 13th century.

The historical significance of Chastel Rouge stems from its role within the defensive network of the County of Tripoli. Originally granted by Tancred to Count Pons in 1112, it was held by the Frankish Montolieu family before being transferred to the Knights Hospitaller in 1177. The fortress faced destruction during Saladin's campaigns in 1188 but was likely rebuilt and retained by Crusader forces until the Mamluk conquest of the county in 1289. Excavations at the site have revealed an even deeper past, uncovering ruins from the Phoenician era and inscriptions from the Greco-Roman period, indicating continuous human activity long before the Crusades.

Today, the castle stands as a historical ruin, with internal wooden floors no longer extant. Access to the upper levels is provided by stone stairs running along the interior and exterior walls of the donjon. While specific details regarding its current management or public access status are not extensively documented in available records, the site remains an important archaeological landmark. It serves as a testament to the layered history of the region, blending medieval military architecture with ancient remnants that predate the Crusader presence by centuries.
