The Castle of Lindoso is a medieval fortress located in the civil parish of Lindoso, within the municipality of Ponte da Barca in the Viana do Castelo district of Portugal. Originally constructed during the 13th century under the reign of King Afonso III, the structure was initially part of broader efforts to strengthen the nation's border defenses, though it held relatively low strategic importance during its early years. The castle is built using traditional stone masonry and features battlemented walls. Its design includes a keep that remains standing today, divided into two floors, with access to the north and south ends of the tower historically provided by doors opened via drawbridges.

The site gained significant military relevance during the Portuguese Restoration War in the 17th century, serving as a crucial support base for Portuguese incursions into Galicia. Following a brief occupation by Spanish troops, the castle underwent extensive modernization and restoration works starting around 1641, with major improvements completed by 1666 and continuing into the 1720s with the addition of a main ravelin. Despite its reinforced state during the Napoleonic Wars, the fortress never saw combat in that conflict and subsequently fell into disuse. Over time, neglect and exposure to the elements caused the structure to deteriorate significantly.

Recognizing its historical value, the Portuguese Government declared the Castle of Lindoso a National Monument on June 23, 1910. Today, it stands as a protected heritage site representing centuries of border warfare and architectural evolution. While no longer used for defensive purposes, the ruins offer insight into the military history of the region between Portugal and Spain. The castle remains an important landmark in the Viana do Castelo district, preserving the memory of its role in securing Portuguese independence and defending the northern frontier.
