The Castle of Charles V, also known as Castello di Lecce, is a historic fortress situated in the city of Lecce within the Apulia region of Italy. While the site originally housed a medieval structure, the current fortress was extensively reinforced and redesigned in 1539 under the direct orders of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. This major renovation was executed by the renowned military architect Gian Giacomo dell'Acaya to strengthen the city's defenses. To accommodate the expanded footprint of the new fortification, two existing religious buildings, the Chapel of the Trinity and the Benedictine Monastery of the Holy Cross, were demolished during the construction process.

Throughout its long history, the castle has served various functions beyond its primary military role. In the 18th century, one of its grand halls was utilized as a theatre, reflecting its growing civic importance. Later, from 1870 until 1979, the complex operated as a military district headquarters. The interior remains architecturally significant today, featuring elegant decorations such as carved capitals, massive stone columns that support the upper floors, and a grand hall illuminated by large stained-glass windows. A peculiar piece of local lore suggests that the Orsini del Balzo family, who owned the property in the 14th century, kept a white bear in the moat to serve as both a status symbol and a deterrent against intruders.

Currently, the Castle of Charles V is in excellent condition and acts as a vibrant cultural hub for the community. It houses the Department of Cultural Affairs for the Municipality of Lecce and frequently serves as a venue for numerous art exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events. This adaptive reuse ensures that the historic structure remains an integral part of daily life in Lecce, preserving its legacy while continuing to serve the public.
