The Castle of Almourol is a striking medieval fortress situated on a small granite islet in the middle of the Tagus River, within the civil parish of Praia do Ribatejo in Portugal. Located approximately four kilometers from the municipal seat of Vila Nova da Barquinha, this iconic structure was originally built by the Knights Templar under the command of Grand Master D. Gualdim Pais. Although the site holds evidence of much older settlements, including a primitive Lusitanian castro and later Roman, Alan, Visigoth, and Arab occupations, the current granite masonry castle dates to the 12th century, with its completion flourishing around 1171. It served as a critical stronghold along the defensive line established during the Portuguese Reconquista.

Historically known as Almorolan when conquered in 1129, the castle represents one of the most emblematic military monuments of the Templar order in Portugal. Excavations on the islet have uncovered significant artifacts ranging from Roman coins and foundations to medieval medallions and marble columns, highlighting the location's strategic importance across millennia. The fortress rises dramatically about 18 meters above the river waters, creating a picturesque and defensible position that has captivated visitors for centuries. Its architecture reflects the robust military style necessary for protecting the frontier during the conflicts between Christian and Moorish forces.

Today, the Castle of Almourol is owned by the Portuguese Republic and stands as a well-preserved symbol of national heritage. While it no longer serves a military function, it remains a popular historical landmark accessible via boat from the riverbanks. The site offers visitors a unique glimpse into medieval history and the influential legacy of the Knights Templar in the region.
