Castle of Aljustrel

The Castle of Aljustrel is a medieval fortification situated on a mountaintop in the civil parish of Aljustrel e Rio de Moinhos, within the municipality of Aljustrel in the Beja district of Portugal. Dominating the landscape of the Baixo Alentejo subregion, the site boasts a deep history that predates its military function, with archaeological evidence indicating occupation during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods. Although there is a historical gap regarding Roman or proto-historic usage, the location later became significant for Muslim civilization in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula. The current structure's origins are attributed to Arab inhabitants between the 8th and 12th centuries, who likely constructed it using taipa techniques upon the foundations of an earlier fortified castro.

Historical records suggest the castle assumed a formal military role during the late Muslim occupation around the 13th century, contemporaneous with the fortress of Alcácer do Sal. Its strategic importance was solidified following the Portuguese Reconquista in 1234, which ushered in a new era of Christian control under King Sancho II. Built primarily from masonry and taipa, the architecture reflects the layered cultural influences of the region. While the exact date of initial construction remains unclear, artifacts dating back to the 9th century confirm the site's long-standing relevance as a defensive and settlement hub throughout various eras of conflict and peace.

Today, the Castle of Aljustrel exists as ruins managed by the Portuguese Republic and remains open to the public. Visitors can explore the remnants of the walls that once encompassed the settlement, offering panoramic views of the surrounding territory.
