Castle of Aguiar da Beira

The Castle of Aguiar da Beira is a medieval fortress located in the civil parish of Aguiar da Beira e Coruche, within the Guarda District of central Portugal. Although its exact original construction date is unrecorded, the site was significantly reconstructed in the early 14th century during the reign of King Denis. This renovation transformed an ancient pre-national settlement and castro into a strategic defensive structure. Today, the property is owned by the Portuguese Republic and managed by the local municipal council, having been ceded to them in 1946. It remains open to the public as a classified national monument, sharing its protected status with the town's historic pillory and fountain.

Architecturally, very little of the original complex survives, as the castle was gradually dismantled over centuries with its materials repurposed for other local projects. The remaining structures consist primarily of the keep tower and sections of the defensive walls that overlook the central square and a historic water deposit. The tower, often mistakenly called the Clock Tower, features two stories and was modified in the 17th century with gargoyles. These additions are linked to local folklore involving a stork, known as the Torre da Cabicanca, which allegedly terrorized residents. The fortress continued to serve a defensive role during the Restoration Wars in the 18th century, and its clock mechanism was restored in 1777.

In the 20th century, the monument underwent essential conservation efforts to ensure its preservation. Major restoration work was conducted between 1942 and 1945 by the Directorate General for Buildings and National Monuments. These projects focused on consolidating the structure, repairing stairs and cornerstones, and restoring battlements and merlons using water-resistant mortar and reinforced concrete. Interior improvements included replacing wood flooring and staircases. Currently, the castle stands as a historical landmark representing the region's medieval heritage, with the tower serving as a prominent visual element in the town's central square alongside the Fonte Ameada.
