Castello Baglioni

Castello Baglioni, also known as Baglioni Castle, is a fortified palace located in the town of Civitella Messer Raimondo within the Province of Chieti in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Although precise documentation regarding its original foundation is scarce, historical records indicate that the structure was established in the 18th century. This period coincides with the arrival and settlement of the prominent Baglioni family in the area, who likely commissioned or significantly developed the estate. Despite undergoing numerous modifications over the centuries, the building remains a defining landmark of the local landscape, representing the architectural influence of the noble family that once controlled it.

Architecturally, the castle features a distinctive quadrangular plan surrounding an almost rectangular inner courtyard. The structure rises two levels high and includes a bastion on its eastern side. The main façade is organized into seven axes and highlighted by stone quoins, with a slightly projecting entrance block. A notable brick tower with stone corbels adorns the façade, contrasting with the stone construction of the rest of the bastion. The grand entrance portal is crafted from stone quarried from the nearby Majella mountain and is topped by a balcony supported by corbels. Visitors entering through the hall pass under a barrel vault decorated with frescoes before reaching the courtyard, where a second tower, possibly serving historically as a watchtower, stands parallel to the main front.

Today, Castello Baglioni stands as a significant example of 18th-century military and residential architecture in Abruzzo. While specific details regarding its current ownership or public accessibility are not extensively documented in available sources, the preservation of its key features, such as the frescoed vaults and unique towers, highlights its enduring historical value.
