Castelbuono is a historic castle and small hamlet located in the Province of Perugia within the Umbria region of central Italy. Administratively, it serves as a frazione of the comune of Bevagna, situated at an elevation of 354 meters above sea level. The site is characterized by its walled medieval structure, which originally included the castle fortifications, two churches, and several auxiliary buildings. As of the 2001 national census, the settlement was home to only ten inhabitants, reflecting its status as a tiny, preserved rural community rather than a bustling town.

The architectural and historical significance of Castelbuono is anchored in its medieval origins and religious art. The location suffered severe damage during the devastating earthquake of 1997, which impacted the structural integrity of the ancient walls and buildings. Despite this destruction, the site retains notable cultural treasures, most prominently a fourteenth-century fresco known as the Maestà. Presumed to be the work of Giovanni di Corraduccio, this artwork depicts the Madonna of the Rose and Child venerated by Saint Michael the Archangel and Saint Stephen. The fresco underwent a significant restoration project led by the local Pro Loco organization and financed by proceeds from Cantalupo's annual Snail Festival.

Today, Castelbuono stands as a testament to Umbrian resilience and artistic heritage. While the physical condition of the castle was compromised by seismic activity, the preservation efforts focused on the sacred art ensure that its historical narrative remains intact. The presence of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the aedicula of the Madonna della Rosa further highlights the religious importance of the site throughout the centuries. Although currently sparsely populated, the hamlet continues to be recognized for its contribution to the regional landscape of castles in Umbria and its unique connection to local traditions and restoration initiatives.
