Carrollcliffe is a historic castle-like structure situated at 400 Benedict Avenue in Tarrytown, New York, perched atop the local landmark known as Tarrytown Crest. Overlooking the expansive Hudson River valley approximately twenty miles north of the George Washington Bridge, the building commands the area skyline with its imposing stone towers. Constructed in two distinct phases completed in 1897 and 1910, the edifice was designed by architect Henry Franklin Kilburn to emulate Norman castle architecture found in Ireland. This specific stylistic choice honored the heritage of its original owner, General Howard Carroll, whose father hailed from Ireland. The finished residence originally boasted forty-five rooms and featured distinctive crenellated towers, serving as a prominent example of Gilded Age estates along Westchester County's famous Millionaires' Row.

The property holds significant historical value as the former home of Howard Carroll Jr., a notable newspaperman and Washington correspondent for The New York Times. Carroll commissioned the estate to reflect his family's roots and status, creating a unique architectural presence in the region. In recognition of its cultural and architectural importance, the village of Tarrytown officially designated Carrollcliffe as a historic landmark in 1981. Throughout its existence, the building has been known by various names, including Axe Castle, The Castle at Tarrytown, and the Castle Hotel & Spa, reflecting its evolution from a private family residence to a public hospitality venue.

Today, Carrollcliffe remains a dominant visual feature of the Tarrytown landscape and continues to serve as a hotel and spa destination.
