Burgruine Liemberg is a historic hilltop castle ruin located in Carinthia, Austria, situated west of the town of Liemberg within the municipality of Liebenfels. Perched on the steep slope of the Göseberg, the complex dates back to 1167, marking its earliest documented reference under Wolfpertus de Liebenberch. Although the surrounding area saw activity during prehistoric and Roman times, the castle itself was constructed in the 12th century. The site features a distinctive architectural blend, comprising a Romanesque round tower approximately nine meters in diameter, a well-preserved Gothic keep, and a remodeled great hall. Despite its unique composition, the relatively small size of the fortress has often caused it to be overlooked in broader historical surveys.

The historical trajectory of Burgruine Liemberg includes significant events such as damage sustained during the Friuli earthquake of 1348. By the 16th century, the site was abandoned as a primary residence after the owners constructed a new Castle Liemberg at the foot of the slope, leaving the original structure to decay. By 1688, the renowned chronicler Valvasor described the site as old, desolate, and deserted. While the main castle fell into ruin, the outwork built on rocky steps below was adapted into a farm residence and remained inhabited until the 20th century. Today, the site stands as a testament to medieval military architecture in the region, preserving elements of both Romanesque and Gothic styles amidst its ruined state.
