Burgruine Griffen is a historic castle ruin situated on a 130-meter-high limestone mountain overlooking the town of Griffen in the Austrian state of Carinthia. Constructed between 1124 and 1146 under the orders of Bishop Otto of Bamberg, the fortress originally served as a strategic property of the Bamberg archdiocese. The site holds significant historical value, notably for its involvement in late 13th-century political conflicts when it was temporarily occupied by Count Ulrich von Heunberg during an uprising against the Habsburgs. Although heavily reconstructed around 1520 to defend against potential Ottoman invasions, the castle never faced a Turkish siege. Ownership eventually transferred to the Habsburg monarchy in 1759 before the structure fell into disuse by 1768 and was largely demolished in 1840.

Today, the ruins are owned by the Market Town of Griffen and remain open to the public as a notable tourist attraction. While the military installation itself exists only as a remnant of its former self, the site offers visitors a glimpse into medieval architecture and regional history. A unique feature of the location is the Griffener Tropfsteinhöhle, a substantial dripstone cave hidden within the mountain beneath the castle foundations. Discovered only in the final days of World War II, this natural landmark spans nearly 500 meters and has been officially recognized as a protected site since 1957. The combination of the atmospheric castle ruins and the accessible cave system makes Burgruine Griffen a distinctive destination for those exploring Carinthia's cultural and geological heritage.
