Haimburg Castle, also known as Heunburg, is a historic rock castle situated in the village of Haimburg near the town of Völkermarkt in Carinthia, Austria. First attested in historical records in 1103 under the name Huneburch, the structure was likely constructed between 1070 and 1103. It served as the ancestral seat of the Counts of Heunburg, a prominent noble family in the region who held power until their male line expired in 1322. The fortress subsequently passed through the hands of the Counts of Pfannberg and the Counts of Gorizia before ultimately coming under the control of the House of Habsburg in 1460 following the Peace of Pusarnitz. This succession of ownership highlights the site's strategic importance and its integral role in the feudal history of Carinthia over several centuries.

In modern times, the castle has transitioned from a military stronghold to a cultural venue. Although it remains privately owned, significant repair efforts were undertaken starting in 1990 by the organization Rettet die Heunburg to preserve the ruins. Since the mid-1990s, the location has gained renown for its artistic utilization, hosting theater performances within its ancient walls. Initially featuring productions by Theater k.l.a.s. from 1995 to 2009, the site has been home to the Heunburg Theater since 2011, which stages plays during the summer months. Today, Haimburg Castle stands as a preserved historical landmark that actively contributes to the local cultural landscape, blending medieval architecture with contemporary theatrical traditions.
