# Burg Bruck

Burg Bruck is a well-preserved medieval castle situated in Lienz, within the Tyrol region of Austria. Perched 711 meters above sea level, the fortress was originally constructed starting around 1252 and completed in 1278 to serve as the primary residence for the Meinhardiner Counts of Görz. The structure exemplifies traditional medieval military architecture, later enhanced by significant artistic additions, most notably the chapel frescoes painted by Simon von Taisten in 1490. Its strategic location and robust design allowed it to remain a significant landmark through centuries of regional political shifts and conflicts.

The castle holds considerable historical importance due to its connection with major European dynasties and events. In 1500, the last Count of Gorizia bequeathed the property to Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I, integrating it into the vast Habsburg possessions. Centuries later, during the French Revolutionary Wars in 1796, the site was occupied by troops of the French First Republic under General Barthélemy Catherine Joubert. Despite these turbulent periods, the building survived intact, transitioning from a noble residence and military stronghold into a civic asset that reflects the rich heritage of the Tyrol area.

In 1942, the City of Lienz purchased Burg Bruck, and it officially opened as a public museum in 1945. Today, it houses an extensive collection featuring paintings, sculptures, and folk art, with a special emphasis on the works of the renowned painter Albin Egger-Lienz. Beyond its role as an art gallery, the castle functions as a vibrant cultural venue for the community, hosting theater performances, concerts, literary readings, and soirées. Open to visitors year-round, Burg Bruck stands as both a protected historical monument and a lively center for arts and culture in eastern Tyrol.
