Budaniv Castle

Budaniv Castle is located in the village of Budaniv in Chortkiv Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. Originally built as a wooden fortress on a hill by Jakub Budzanowski in the 16th century, the castle served as a stronghold for the Budzanowski family. The structure was destroyed during Tartar invasions but was later reconstructed. The castle has been designated as an architectural monument of local importance.

The castle experienced a tumultuous history marked by repeated destruction and reconstruction. In 1631, it passed to Alexander Sieneński and subsequently to the Lewoczyński family. Cossack forces captured and destroyed the castle during revolts in 1648 and 1651, with a 1661 survey documenting severe deterioration of the structure. Turkish troops conquered and partially destroyed the fortress in 1672 and 1675. By 1765, renovation efforts were undertaken to preserve the standing towers. Beginning in 1817, the castle was donated to a parish priest, leading to significant modifications including the conversion of the western wing into a church and the construction of a convent building for the Sisters of Charity in 1846. World War I brought further destruction, and after 1945, the remaining structures were converted into a hospital.

Architecturally, the castle consisted of a quadrilateral masonry building with four circular bastions at the corners, constructed in the early 17th century under the orders of Jan and Marcin Chodorowski. Today, only two bastions and the eastern section of the castle walls remain standing, serving as remnants of this historically significant fortification.
