# Brežice Castle

Brežice Castle is a historic fortress located in the town of Brežice in southeastern Slovenia, situated at Cesta prvih borcev 1 near the confluence of the Sava and Krka rivers. While a wooden fortification existed on the site prior to 1241 and a stone castrum was recorded by 1249, the current structure primarily dates from the 16th century. Originally serving as an administrative and economic hub for the Bishopric of Salzburg, the castle housed a mint and judicial chambers before becoming a critical Habsburg defense point. Its name derives from the Slovene word for riverbank, reflecting its strategic riverside position, while it was historically known by the German name Schloss Rann.

The castle's architecture is defined by its Renaissance style, developed between 1530 and 1551 under Italian master builders including Julio Dispatio and the brothers Andrea and Domenico del'Allio. Commissioned by Emperor Ferdinand I to counter Turkish raids, the design features four defensive towers linked by double walls. This robust construction proved vital during the peasant revolts of 1515 and 1573; notably, it was the only fortress in the Lower Sava Valley to withstand the 1573 uprising led by Ilija Gregorič, successfully repelling attackers with cannon fire from its corner towers. The interior remains renowned for its well-preserved frescoes, particularly within the Chapel and the Hall of Knights.

Throughout its turbulent history, the castle survived multiple fires, including one during the 1515 revolt where rebels killed the knight Marko of Klisa, and another in 1528 which prompted its major reconstruction. Ownership eventually transferred from the Gallenstein noble family to the Croatian Frankopan house in the mid-17th century. Today, Brežice Castle stands as a significant cultural monument in Slovenia, preserving its Renaissance character and serving as a testament to the region's complex military and social past.
