Branč Castle

Branč Castle is a historic fortification located in the village of Branč in the Trnava Region of Slovakia, situated on a hill rising 475 meters above the nearby village of Podbranč. The castle was constructed during the 13th century, with evidence from coin findings dated between 1251 and 1261 suggesting it was built by Master Aba of Hlohovec during this period. One of the oldest castles in the Záhorie region, Branč Castle served as a crucial element in a network of frontier fortifications designed to protect trade routes connecting Moravia to the Carpathian Mountain passes.

Throughout its history, Branč Castle changed hands among various prominent regional figures and noble families. After its initial construction, ownership transferred between the Abovci family and Master Abrahám Rúfus in 1297, before falling under the control of Matúš Čák Trenčiansky in 1309. The castle functioned as an administrative center for a large estate and maintained its strategic importance throughout the medieval period. However, by the end of the 17th century, the castle was destroyed by fire and subsequently abandoned, leading to its gradual deterioration.

Today, Branč Castle exists as a ruin in Slovakia's landscape. Only remnants of the castle walls and sections of the lower castle structure remain standing, providing evidence of its once-significant architectural presence. The site continues to attract historical interest as an important example of medieval Slovak fortifications and defensive architecture.
