Brahehus
wikipedia

Brahehus Castle is a historic ruin situated approximately three kilometers outside Gränna in Jönköping County, Sweden. Perched 270 meters above sea level and 180 meters above Lake Vättern, the site offers panoramic views of the water and the island of Visingsö. Constructed beginning in 1638 for Count Per Brahe the Younger, the castle was intended as a dower house for his wife, Countess Kristina Katarina Stenbock. Although planning started in the 1630s, building progress was slow due to logistical challenges, particularly the difficult task of hauling heavy stone up the steep hillside to the summit known formerly as Gudsbacka.

The architectural design reflects Renaissance influences common in the Mälaren Valley, blending native Swedish elements with Palladian styles, while its hilltop placement emulates castles found in the Rhine Valley. The structure originally featured a square main building with sides measuring twenty-two meters, flanked by two spired towers connected by side walls. The northern tower served defensive purposes with guard stations and weapon storage, whereas the southern tower contained essential utilities like a well and kitchen. Visually, Brahehus was designed to form an equilateral triangle with Count Brahe's other estates, Västanå Manor and Visingsborg Castle, creating a symbolic geometric landscape around Gränna.

Despite its grand ambitions, the castle was abandoned by the 1680s and suffered a devastating fire in 1708 that left it in ruins. Today, the remains stand near the modern E4 highway as a popular destination for tourism and recreation. Visitors frequent the site not only for its historical significance regarding the powerful Brahe family but also for the spectacular scenery it commands over the surrounding province of Småland. The ruins serve as a lasting monument to seventeenth-century aristocratic life and architectural ambition in southern Sweden.
