Bozcaada Castle

Bozcaada Castle is a historic fortress located on the Turkish island of Bozcaada, formerly known as Tenedos, within Çanakkale Province. Situated in the northeast of the island just north of the main town, the site is easily accessible to visitors arriving via the ferry from Geyikli on the Anatolian mainland. While an earlier fortification likely existed prior to the fourteenth century, possibly constructed by Phoenician, Roman, or Venetian forces, the current structure primarily dates to 1455. It was rebuilt by Sultan Mehmet II of the Ottoman Empire after he conquered the island, replacing a previous castle that had been demolished following the War of Chioggia between Venice and Genoa.

The architectural layout consists of two distinct sections: a bailey and a central citadel, surrounded by a substantial moat measuring 250 meters in length and 10 meters in width. Inside the citadel walls, the complex houses various functional structures including cisterns, an arsenal, an infirmary, a well, a mosque, and multiple rooms. Historically, the entrance was secured by a Saracen gate spanning the moat. The fortress played a strategic role during regional conflicts, notably changing hands during the Cretan War when Venetian forces captured it in 1656, only for the Ottomans under Köprülü Mehmet Pasha to recapture it in 1657. Following this reconquest, the castle underwent significant renewal, with further renovations commissioned by Sultan Mahmut II in 1815.

Today, Bozcaada Castle remains largely intact and stands as a prominent testament to Ottoman military engineering and the island's turbulent past. It is open to the public and serves as a key tourist attraction in the region. Visitors can explore the well-preserved grounds to gain insight into the defensive strategies of the era and the layered history of control between major Mediterranean powers. Its condition allows for a clear view of its original design elements, making it an essential destination for those interested in the historical geography of the Aegean Sea.
