Bornem Castle
Bornem Castle, also known as Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde Castle, is a historic country house situated in Bornem within the Antwerp province of Belgium. Located on the Oude Schelde, a dead arm of the Scheldt River, the site sits at an elevation of one meter. While the current structure is a 19th-century building designed by architect Hendrik Beyaert, the location holds significant historical depth dating back to the 10th or 11th centuries. The earliest fortification was established to defend against Viking incursions, marking the site as a strategic stronghold for over a millennium before evolving into a residential estate.
The property's architectural lineage includes a manor house constructed in 1587 by the Spanish nobleman Pedro Coloma, Baron of Bornhem. This 16th-century structure was eventually demolished to make way for the present house at the end of the 1800s. The estate has been intimately linked to the de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde family since they leased the property and subsequently purchased it outright in 1773. Today, the castle remains in the private ownership of this noble house, with John de Marnix de Sainte-Aldegonde, the 14th Count of Bornem, serving as the current resident.
Throughout its history, the castle has transitioned from a defensive fortification to a noble residence under the stewardship of the House of Coloma and later the House of Marnix. The list of chatelains reflects a continuous line of aristocratic leadership, including various counts and countesses who shaped the estate's legacy. Although it is no longer a military fortress, Bornem Castle stands as a testament to Belgian heritage, preserving the history of its famous families while functioning as a private home on the banks of the historic river.
