Borgestad Manor

Borgestad Manor is a historic estate located in the municipality of Skien within Telemark, Norway. Situated in the former parish of Gjerpen near Porsgrunn, it stands as one of the largest estates in the region. The property originated as a church holding before becoming a crown estate following the Reformation. The current manor house was constructed around 1702, accompanied by the layout of a formal Baroque garden. This architectural development coincided with the acquisition of the farm in 1700 by Anna Clausdatter and her husband, Major General Johan Hanssøn Arnold. Anna Clausdatter remains a notable figure in local history, famously immortalized in the poem Stolt Anne.

Throughout its existence, the manor has been owned by several prominent Norwegian families, reflecting its significant status. Notable proprietors include the merchant and shipowner Diderik von Cappelen and Gunnar Knudsen, who served as the Prime Minister of Norway. The ownership lineage traces back to the 17th century, passing through the Løvenskiold and Aall families before reaching the Knudsen line. In 2003, management of the property was transferred to the Foundation Borgestad Manor, ensuring its preservation under the chairmanship of Petter Borgestad. Today, the estate continues to represent a key piece of cultural heritage in Telemark, maintaining its historical grounds and buildings for future generations while serving as a testament to the region's aristocratic and political history.
