Bonlez Castle

Bonlez Castle is a historic fortress located in the village of Bonlez within the municipality of Chaumont-Gistoux, in Walloon Brabant, Wallonia, Belgium. While the exact year of its initial construction is not specified in available records, the site has served as a seigneurial residence since at least the early 14th century. The property originally belonged to the Ripemont family in 1312 before passing to the de Glymes family in 1412. Through marriage at the end of the 16th century, ownership transferred to the Hosdain family, who jointly held the lordship of Haut and Bas-Bonlez with the Verreycken family.

The castle's architectural evolution is particularly notable during the tenure of the Verreycken family, who held high judicial authority and sought to expand and embellish the original fortified house. They transformed the structure into an expansive and elegant brick castle, characterized by surrounding moats and heavy square towers at each corner. Access to the estate was traditionally granted via a wide avenue lined with linden trees. In 1643, Louis-François de Verreycken was elevated to the title of Baron of Bonlez, marking a significant moment in the estate's aristocratic history.

Today, Bonlez Castle remains a private residence and is currently owned by a wealthy Belgian family.
