wikipedia

Boldt Castle stands as a premier landmark in the Thousand Islands region of New York State, situated on the private Heart Island within the Saint Lawrence River near Alexandria Bay. Constructed between 1900 and 1904, this six-story mansion was designed by the architectural firm G. W. & W. D. Hewitt in the distinctive Châteauesque style, reminiscent of French Renaissance châteaux. The estate was originally commissioned by George Boldt, a wealthy German-American hotelier known for managing the famous Waldorf-Astoria in New York City and the Bellevue-Stratford in Philadelphia. Boldt intended the sprawling residence to serve as a testament to his love for his wife, Louise, creating a luxurious retreat in the midst of the scenic river landscape.

The history of the castle is marked by a poignant tragedy that halted its initial development. Construction abruptly ceased in 1904 following the sudden death of Boldt's wife, leaving the structure unfinished and abandoned for decades. The millionaire never returned to the site, and the building slowly deteriorated until the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977. Since then, the authority has invested approximately fifteen million dollars into extensive restoration efforts to preserve the historic integrity of the mansion and its surrounding grounds, including features like the Alster Tower.

Today, Boldt Castle operates as a major tourist attraction and museum, open seasonally from mid-May through mid-October. Visitors can explore the restored rooms, which showcase the opulence of the Gilded Age, along with the formal gardens and auxiliary buildings on the island. Managed carefully to maintain its historical significance, the castle serves as both a memorial to a tragic love story and a celebrated example of early twentieth-century architecture. It remains one of the most visited destinations in the region, drawing guests from around the world to experience its unique blend of natural beauty and architectural grandeur.
