Bogenšperk Castle is a fully restored Renaissance fortress situated on a low hill at an elevation of 412 meters in the Municipality of Šmartno pri Litiji, central Slovenia. Originally constructed in the 16th century by the noble Wagen family to replace a nearby earthquake-damaged structure, the building features four tracts connecting four towers around an arcaded inner courtyard. Its oldest section, the north tower, began as a standalone fortification, while the south-east tower retains evidence of a devastating lightning-induced fire in 1759 that prevented its full reconstruction. The castle rests directly on bedrock and boasts a unique deep well carved into the rock beneath it. Today, it stands as a protected cultural monument of significant architectural integrity.

The site holds profound historical importance due to its association with Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, a renowned 17th-century scientist and Fellow of the Royal Society. After purchasing the estate in 1672, Valvasor transformed the castle into an intellectual hub equipped with a library, printing press, and graphic studio. It was here that he produced his monumental work, The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola, though the immense costs eventually forced him to sell the property. Following periods of ownership by various families, including the Windischgrätzes who abandoned it in 1943, the castle served as a military hospital before Jesuits occupied it in 1957. A systematic reconstruction launched in 1972 returned the structure to its former glory.

Currently, Bogenšperk Castle operates as a vibrant museum and cultural venue. Visitors can explore reconstructed versions of Valvasor's study and printing press alongside diverse collections ranging from witchcraft artifacts and traditional folk costumes to geological surveys and hunting memorabilia. The grounds include a park, a reconstructed chapel, and a wedding hall with a restaurant on the first floor. This multi-functional use ensures the castle remains an active center for education and tourism while preserving its rich legacy as a beacon of Slovenian history and scientific inquiry.
