Bodzentyn Castle is a historic ruined fortress located in the town of Bodzentyn, Poland. Originally established as a wooden mansion by Bishop Bodzanta in the early fourteenth century, the structure was soon replaced by a stone castle surrounded by a moat under Bishop Florian Mokrski during the second half of the 1300s. The site holds significant historical importance, notably serving as a stop for King Wladyslaw Jagiello in 1410 during his pilgrimage to the Holy Cross before the pivotal Battle of Grunwald. Throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the castle experienced an era of unprecedented prosperity and expansion, evolving from its medieval roots into a magnificent residence featuring Renaissance architectural elements.

Successive bishops, including Cardinal Fryderyk Jagiellończyk and later leaders like Jan Konarski and Piotr Tomicki, commissioned extensive renovations led by the Italian architect Jan Balcer. Further transformations between 1657 and 1691 reshaped the complex into a Baroque-style structure with a distinctive horseshoe-shaped plan, with final significant updates occurring in the late eighteenth century under architect Jakub Fontana. However, the castle's prominence declined after the construction of a new episcopal palace in Kielce. Following the nationalization of church properties in 1789, the building was repurposed as a granary and military hospital before being abandoned in 1814.

In the nineteenth century, the neglected structure sadly became a source of free building materials for local residents, accelerating its decay into the ruins seen today. Although the site received official protection in 1902, it was never restored to its former grandeur. Currently, Bodzentyn Castle stands as a protected historical monument and a testament to the region's rich ecclesiastical and architectural heritage, offering visitors a glimpse into centuries of Polish history ranging from the Gothic period through the Renaissance and Baroque eras.
