Bobovac is a historic fortified city located near Vareš and the village of Borovica in modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. Constructed before 1349 under the direction of Stjepan II Kotromanić, the Ban of Bosnia, it served as the primary royal capital and seat of Bosnian rulers throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. While it shared administrative duties with the court at Kraljeva Sutjeska, Bobovac was distinguished by its superior fortifications, making it the most secure stronghold in the medieval kingdom. The site is strategically positioned close to the former royal court, emphasizing its central role in the region's political landscape during the height of Bosnian power.

Architecturally, the complex featured a large residential area enclosed within massive walls, alongside a distinct royal court separated by inner fortifications. The design incorporated representative elements of Gothic architecture, most notably seen in the Grand Church and the specialized Burial Chapel which served as a mausoleum for Bosnian kings. This royal necropolis remains a significant feature of the ruins today. The city functioned as the kingdom's heart until 1463, when King Stephen Tomašević moved the seat to Jajce amidst rising conflicts. Shortly thereafter, Ottoman forces invaded and captured Bobovac, an event that hastened the complete Ottoman conquest of Bosnia and marked the end of the independent medieval Bosnian state.

Currently, Bobovac exists as an archaeological site and protected national monument designated by the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although the city was effectively demolished following the 1463 battle, extensive ruins remain, including the restored royal burial chapel, mausoleum, and fragments of the residential and religious complexes. These remnants offer valuable insights into medieval Bosnian urban planning and royal life. As a Category 0 historical monument, the location is preserved for its immense cultural value, standing as a solemn testament to the final days of the Bosnian Kingdom before its absorption into the Ottoman Empire.
