Blagaj

Blagaj Fortress, also known as Stjepan-grad or Stipan-grad, is a historic town-fortress complex located near the village of Blagaj in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Perched on a high, inaccessible karst hill approximately 310 meters above sea level, the structure overlooks the famous source of the Buna River. While the site likely originated with local Illyrian builders in the fourth century and saw development around 948, the current limestone fortification features multilayered construction techniques typical of medieval military architecture. Its strategic elevation provided a commanding view of the surrounding valley, making it a critical defensive point throughout the region's turbulent history.

The fortress holds immense historical significance as the former seat of the powerful Kosača noble family, most notably serving as the residence for Stjepan Vukčić Kosača, after whom the local name Stjepan-grad is derived. Throughout the centuries, control of the site shifted between the Banate of Bosnia, the Kingdom of Bosnia, and eventually the Ottoman Empire following a documented siege. This transition marks the fortress as a tangible record of the political and military shifts that defined the Balkans during the late Middle Ages and early modern period. It stands as a testament to the region's complex heritage, bridging classical, medieval, and Ottoman eras.

Today, Blagaj Fortress is recognized as a Category I historical monument by the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, a designation granted in December 2003. Although the structure has undergone repairs to ensure its stability, it remains an evocative ruin that is open to the public. Visitors can explore the grounds to appreciate the remaining limestone walls and ashlar masonry while enjoying panoramic views of the historic site of Blagaj. As part of the protected historic urban area, the fortress continues to serve as a key cultural landmark, drawing tourists interested in both its architectural remnants and its rich narrative of noble power and imperial conquest.
