Bhagwantgad

Bhagwantgad Fort is a historic hill fort situated in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, India, approximately 18 kilometers from the town of Malvan. Perched on the northern bank of the Gad River, also known as Kalaval Creek, the installation covers an area of roughly 1.5 acres and rises about 100 feet above the surrounding landscape. Constructed primarily from stone, the fort was originally built by Pant Pratinidhi as a strategic military outpost to counter the activities of the Sawant rulers of Sawantwadi, who had recently established the nearby Bharatgad fort on the opposite bank. Its location within the Konkan coast range made it a critical point for controlling regional movement and river access during periods of Maratha dominance.

The fortress holds significant historical value due to its involvement in various power struggles between the Maratha Empire, local chieftains, and colonial forces. Although initially under the control of the Chhatrapati of Kolhapur, it eventually fell to the Sawants. In 1748, Tulaji Angre launched a prolonged but unsuccessful eighteen-month siege against the fort, highlighting its defensive strength. The structure ultimately came under British control in March 1818 when East India Company troops, led by Captain Gray and Pierson, captured it after the garrison abandoned their positions upon seeing British forces cross the creek. Following this event, the site remained under British rule until Indian independence in 1947.

Today, Bhagwantgad Fort exists largely in ruins and is owned by the Government of India. While the original gates and bastions have deteriorated over time, the Siddheshwar Temple located within the complex remains in good condition and serves as a primary point of interest for visitors. The site is currently open to the public and is covered in dense vegetation, offering a scenic yet rugged experience for trekkers and history enthusiasts. Accessible via the base village of Masure, the fort can be visited alongside Bharatgad in a single day trip, with basic amenities available in nearby Malvan.
