Bezławki

Bezławki is a small village located in northern Poland within the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, specifically in Kętrzyn County and the administrative district of Gmina Reszel. While the settlement likely hosted a watermill as early as 1356, its most prominent historical feature is a structure originally built by the Teutonic Knights during the 14th century. This small Ordensburg, or castle, was strategically constructed on a hill that was easily accessible only from the north. Its primary purpose was military defense against frequent raids by Lithuanian forces during a turbulent period in the region's history.

The site underwent a significant transformation in 1583 when the medieval castle was converted into an Evangelical church, marking a shift from military stronghold to a center of religious life. Following this conversion, the building hosted services conducted in the Polish language, reflecting the cultural dynamics of the area. The architecture evolved over subsequent centuries, with a dedicated church tower added between 1726 and 1728. Later, in 1884, the interior of the building was completely refurnished to update its liturgical function and aesthetic appeal.

Today, the former castle stands as a historic church and remains a key landmark within the village, which had a population of just over one hundred residents as of 2021. Although the structure no longer serves its original defensive role, it preserves the architectural legacy of the Teutonic Order while adapting to centuries of religious use. The building exemplifies the region's complex history, transitioning from a fortress designed for protection against external threats to a enduring place of worship that has served the local community for hundreds of years.
