Bergh Castle

Huis Bergh, also known as Bergh Castle, is a prominent historical fortress located in the city of 's-Heerenberg within the Gelderland province of the Netherlands. Originally constructed around the year 1200 by the Counts Van den Bergh, it stands as one of the largest surviving castles in the country. The structure primarily features brick construction and showcases an architectural evolution spanning the 13th through the 17th centuries. Its design reflects various historical periods, though the building suffered severe damage during the Dutch Revolt when the Duke of Alba dispossessed the ruling count. The castle's resilience was tested further by major fires in 1735 and again in 1939, yet it remains in good condition today following extensive restoration efforts.

The castle's modern existence is largely due to Jan Herman van Heek, an industrialist from Enschede who purchased the property in 1912. After the devastating fire of 1939, local residents helped rescue most of the furniture, allowing renovations to commence immediately and finish by 1941. Since the 1960s, Huis Bergh has gradually opened its doors to the public, transforming into a popular tourist attraction. Visitors are drawn not only to the restored medieval architecture but also to its status as a cultural hub that preserves the legacy of the region and its former noble inhabitants.

Internally, the castle houses a remarkable collection of late-medieval and Renaissance art, making it historically significant beyond its architecture. The museum is particularly renowned for its early Italian paintings, including a rare panel from Duccio's Maestà and works by artists such as Vittore Crivelli and Bartolomeo Bulgarini. The collection also features portraits of the Van den Bergh family by Otto van Veen, pieces by Lucas Cranach the Elder, and works associated with Hieronymus Bosch. Complementing the paintings is an extraordinary archive of medieval manuscripts and well-preserved family documents that offer deep insights into the castle's centuries-long history.
