Belvoir Castle

Belvoir Castle, also known by its Hebrew name Kochav HaYarden or the Arabic Kawkab al-Hawa, is a prominent Crusader fortress located in northern Israel. Situated on the eastern edge of the Issachar Plateau within the Lower Galilee region, the site overlooks the Jordan Valley approximately twenty kilometers south of the Sea of Galilee. Construction of this strategic stronghold began in 1168 under the direction of Gilbert of Assailly, the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller. The castle was designed to command the vital route from Gilead into the Kingdom of Jerusalem, leveraging its elevation of five hundred meters above the valley floor to monitor movement and control access across the nearby river crossing.

Architecturally, Belvoir is renowned as the best-preserved Crusader castle in Israel and serves as a prime example of a concentric castle design. The structure features two distinct circuits of defensive walls, with one ring situated inside the other, creating a formidable layer of protection that was advanced for its time. Historically, the site sits atop the remnants of a Jewish village named Kochava from the Roman and Byzantine periods, preserving a legacy that spans multiple eras. Medieval descriptions poetically noted its lofty position, comparing the fortress to an eagle's nest set amidst the stars, highlighting its dominance over the surrounding landscape.

Today, the castle exists as a well-maintained ruin within the boundaries of Belvoir National Park, officially designated as Kochav HaYarden National Park. While it no longer serves a military function, the site remains a significant historical landmark managed for public access and education. Visitors can explore the extensive remains of the double-walled fortifications, which offer tangible insights into medieval military engineering and the Crusader presence in the Holy Land. Its exceptional state of preservation allows modern observers to appreciate the strategic foresight and architectural sophistication employed by the Knights Hospitaller nearly nine centuries ago.
