Belle Isle Castle

Belle Isle Castle is an historic 18th-century house situated on Belle Isle, a 470-acre estate near Lisbellaw in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Originally constructed around 1700 by Sir Ralph Gore, the fourth Baronet, the building was significantly expanded by his grandson, General Ralph Gore, the first Earl of Ross. Born within the house in 1725, the Earl enlisted designer Thomas Wright to create magnificent gardens extending to the shores of Lough Erne, while adding cottages and a distinctive tower to the structure. The property remained in the Gore family until the early 19th century before passing through the Hardinge lineage and eventually to the Porter family, who owned it for over a century and added various office wings and residential cottages.

The architectural character of the castle features a grand banquet hall, an overlook tower, a gallery, and a central courtyard. Its interiors showcase a blend of English and Irish furnishings, notable works by Russian, Irish, and English painters, and a grand fireplace. Large floor-to-ceiling windows provide sweeping views of the historic gardens established in the 1700s. In 1991, the estate was sold by the Porter descendants to the Duke of Abercorn for his son, Lord Nicholas Hamilton. Following this transfer, the castle underwent extensive refurbishment and expansion to adapt to modern hospitality needs while preserving its historical integrity.

Today, Belle Isle Castle serves as a luxury hotel and a popular venue for weddings and events, continuing a tradition of welcoming the public that dates back to 1760. The former coach houses and cottages have been converted into guest rooms, offering visitors a stay within this storied environment. The grounds also feature the Belle Isle Cookery School, which opened in 2004, adding a culinary dimension to the estate's offerings. This transformation ensures the preservation of the site's rich heritage, allowing guests to experience its unique history ranging from its Gaelic origins as Senadh-Mic-Maghnusa to its current status as a premier destination in Northern Ireland.
