Bellaghy Castle

Bellaghy is a historic village located in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, situated northwest of Lough Neagh and approximately five miles northeast of Magherafelt. While often associated with the name Bellaghy Castle, the site is historically known as Bellaghy Bawn, a well-preserved fortified house constructed in the early 17th century. Built around 1622 under the authority of the Worshipful Company of Vintners, this structure served as a key element of the English Plantation of Ulster. The architecture reflects the defensive needs of the era, featuring strong walls designed to protect settlers during a period of significant social and political upheaval in the region.

The historical significance of the site extends beyond its colonial origins, as archaeological evidence indicates the presence of earlier Gaelic settlements, including a ringfort, proving the area has been inhabited for centuries. Today, Bellaghy Bawn no longer serves a military or residential function but has been repurposed as a museum dedicated to local history and literature. It stands as a central landmark within the village, which is also famous as the birthplace, childhood home, and final resting place of Seamus Heaney, the Nobel Prize-winning poet.

Currently, the village thrives as a cultural hub within the Mid-Ulster District, with a population recorded at over 1,000 residents in the 2001 census. The fortified house remains in good condition, operating alongside the Seamus Heaney HomePlace arts centre to attract visitors interested in heritage and the arts.
