Belaj

Belaj is a small village and historic estate located in the north-eastern part of Istria County, Croatia, within the municipality of Cerovlje. Situated on a small hill approximately 210 meters above sea level, the site lies along the road connecting Paz and Šušnjevica, surrounded by extensive vineyards. While the location was first mentioned in historical documents in 1367 under the name Bray, the current structure dates to the early 17th century. Following the devastation of the nearby Posert Castle during the Uskok War between 1615 and 1617, Daniel Barbo von Waxenstein constructed this new residence to serve as the center of the estate. The property remained in the hands of his descendants until 1668, when it was sold to the noble Auersperg family and integrated into a larger feudal manor.

The castle is recognized as a registered piece of historical heritage and showcases architectural roots from the post-war reconstruction period, often associated with the Baroque style prevalent in the region during that era of noble expansion. For centuries, the estate was defined by its significant agricultural output, particularly its numerous hectares of vineyards which remain a central feature of the landscape today. The site stands as a testament to the shifting power dynamics among noble families in Istria, transitioning from the Barbo lineage to the Auerspergs who unified several local castles under a single administration.

In modern times, Belaj Castle has been revitalized for public engagement and tourism. Since opening its doors to visitors in 2017, the estate functions as a cultural and gastronomic destination. The grounds now feature a fully operational wine production facility and cellar, reflecting its long-standing viticultural tradition. Guests can access a degustation room, an authentic restaurant, and a delicatessen shop located within the historic buildings. Additionally, the first floor of the central building has been restored and opened for tours, allowing the public to explore the interior of this centuries-old Istrian landmark while enjoying the surrounding rural scenery.
