Bar is a historic city situated on the Riv River in the Vinnytsia Oblast of central Ukraine, within the traditional region of Podolia. While often referred to colloquially as Bar Castle due to its origins, it evolved from a fortified trading outpost originally known as Rov, which was first documented in 1401. The settlement served as a strategic border defense between the Kingdom of Poland and the Ottoman Empire, frequently placing it at the center of regional conflicts. In 1537, the Polish Queen Bona Sforza officially renamed the town Bar in honor of her native city of Bari, Italy, cementing its cultural ties to Western Europe. The city was later granted Magdeburg rights in 1540, fostering its growth as an administrative and commercial hub.

The architectural heritage of Bar reflects its turbulent history and diverse influences, most notably seen in landmarks like the Saint Anne Church.
