Banfi Manor

Banfi Manor is a historic estate located on a hill in the village of Banfi, adjacent to the municipal seat of Štrigova in Međimurje County, northern Croatia. While the current structure dates back to the 18th century, it was constructed upon the ruins of an earlier fortress known as Castle Banffy. This original medieval castle was likely established around 1373 by the noble Bánffy family of Alsólendva. The site therefore represents a layered history, transitioning from a defensive medieval stronghold to a later residential manor that reflects the changing needs and styles of the region's aristocracy over several centuries.

Architecturally, the manor is a modest, one-storey building designed with an L-shaped ground plan. Its exterior frontage is characterized by simplicity, featuring rhythmically aligned windows and a distinctive arcade entrance situated beneath the west wing. Although sometimes associated with Baroque influences due to its era of reconstruction, the design remains functional and understated. Over the past few years, the property has undergone thorough renovation efforts to restore its structural integrity and historical appearance, ensuring its preservation for future generations while maintaining its original charm.

Throughout its existence, the manor has changed hands among various prominent noble families, including the Banffy, Feštetić, and Franetović lines. Today, the estate is privately owned by the Žižek family, local entrepreneurs from Međimurje County. This continuous occupation highlights the building's enduring significance within the local community. Beyond its architectural value, Banfi Manor serves as a tangible link to the region's feudal past and stands as a notable landmark for visitors exploring the cultural heritage and hiking trails of northwestern Croatia.
